iconIs teeth whitening safe?

Before taking a teeth whitening treatment, we recommend you go to Dr. Rangel's for a check-up to ensure your gums and teeth are healthful and notice if this type of treatment fits you. The most important element used to whiten your teeth is known as hydrogen peroxide, which is used as an antiseptic. The use of H2O2-containing solutions needs to be prevented in patients with damaged or unhealthy tissues. For nightguard bleaching is better to use small doses of H2O2, avoiding sustained and long-time period use, patients who do bleaching utilizing a nightguard need to be checked and monitored frequently.

iconDo you brush your teeth after whitening strips?

Before any sort of whitening, we recommend brushing your teeth. This is done to guarantee that any plaque (the sticky surface layer on your teeth) is removed and that any whitening ingredient in the strips or gel reaches the teeth in the most direct way possible. We do not recommend brushing your teeth shortly after whitening because they may get sensitive for a few hours. Whitening strips have lower sensitivity than other whitening methods; however, the whitening process will take longer due to the lower quantity of hydrogen peroxide active ingredient.

iconHow long does teeth whitening last?

How long teeth can whitening last varies and depends a lot on how well you take care of your hygiene, you may want to avoid smoking and consuming food and beverages that contain high amounts of sugar and colorants that can stain your teeth. Take care of the whiteness o your teeth by being consistent when using your nightguard and brushing regularly (at least two times a day). Learn good brushing techniques that will keep your overall mouth and teeth in good health and looks. The American Dental Association recommends to:

- Make use of fluoride toothpaste.
- Brush your teeth twice every day with a soft toothbrush that is the proper length and shape for your mouth and can reach all regions.
- Get a new toothbrush every three to four months.

We share with you the proper brushing technique according to the ADA:

- Place your toothbrush at a 45-degree perspective to the gums.
- Circulate the comb from side to side in short strokes.
- Brush the outer, internal, and chewing surfaces of your teeth.
- To smooth the inner surfaces of the front teeth, tilt the comb vertically and make up-and-down strokes.

It is natural for your teeth to gradually return to their original color, especially if you do not take the recommended precautions and care. However, if you follow these recommendations above, you’ll keep your teeth whiter for longer, and, in addition, you can continue with your whitening treatments for better and longer-lasting whiteness.

iconWhat is the best teeth-whitening toothpaste?

Various toothpaste brands promote teeth whitening; however, as we’ve mentioned before, the ingredient used is called hydrogen peroxide. You can check the amount of this element in your toothpaste content; also, you may prepare your own by mixing hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. Apart from visiting Dr. Rangel before you go for any treatment, we suggest you brush your teeth with toothpaste that supports tooth sensitivity.

Take into consideration that the hydrogen peroxide or toothpaste you may buy contain a minimal dose of the chemical that is very safe to use at home; but, for the same reason, you may not get the same whitening results from brushing your teeth with these items as you would from proper in-office treatment. This is due to two factors: 1) your dentist can use a 30% or higher concentration of hydrogen peroxide, which removes stains, and 2) the use of UV light speeds up the procedure and reduces your treatment visits.
